PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

A man riding a scooter was killed in Hollywood early Tuesday morning after another driver crashed into him from behind, ejecting him.

Richard Ferguson, 56, of Hollywood, was riding to work and was not far from his job at Colony Hardware when he was hit, his younger brother Bill Ferguson told the South Florida ֱ on Thursday. Ferguson died instantly.

The driver of a white Honda Civic who hit the scooter shortly before 5 a.m. in the area of South Park Road and Pembroke Road drove off after the crash, Hollywood Police said.

Originally from Connecticut, Ferguson moved to South Florida 13 years ago to attend a rehabilitation facility. He got his life back on track, his brother said, and was a dedicated worker who had been employed at the hardware store for the past seven years.

“He loved to fish, and had no filter,” Bill Ferguson said. “He didn’t know when the joke was inappropriate and always told jokes. He was funny, just freaking funny.”

Ferguson rode his scooter to work every morning about 4:30 a.m., his brother said.

“I think that people make mistakes, but you got to own them,” Bill Ferguson said of the driver fleeing the scene. “Turn yourself in.”

The car is believed to have damage on the hood, the front right side of the bumper and the passenger mirror, the department said in a news release Wednesday. Surveillance video in the area recorded the car fleeing the scene.

Hollywood Police have not released additional information.
